Westworld: Season 1 Finale Review

Warning: Full spoilers for the episode below.

The thing that made me nervous going into Westworld’s season finale was that yes, at this point, William and the Man in Black being one and the same was blatantly obvious. So if the finale held off on this until the very end, saving it as a big “Gotcha!”, it would have been decidedly weak. That being the case, it was good to see that moment occur about half way through the episode, because now a weight had been lifted and we still had plenty of time left for other events to take precedence.

Should the William/Man in Black reveal still have happened earlier in the season? Yes, I think so. It couldn’t help but feel like a bit of a waste of finale screen time seeing MIB explain it all to Dolores since most viewers could see it coming for so long, complete with William picking up a black hat for the first time. Still, the moment where he saw Dolores have the same “meet cute” with another guest that he’d had was impactful as far as showing his perception of her as someone meant for him shatter. Also, I was glad to at least have him tell her, “You never did escape,” since that was my big concern with this scenario since it was first suggested as a potential twist – that Dolores’ whole journey with William this season was actually a futile/pointless one, since she never did actually get away.

Swimming in a Gown?! The Most Mariah Carey Moments from Mariah’s World

Mariah Carey‘s world is just a sweet, sweet fantasy, baby.

The singer’s new reality series Mariah’s World premiered Sunday on E! and it was full of amazing moments that only The Elusive Chanteuse could get away with.

Bianca Storm returns!

Recording artists have been known to adopt alter egos from time to time — remember Chris Gaines? No? Just us then — but none of them compare to the brunette diva Carey played (and battled) in her 1999 music video for “Heartbreaker.”

Carey once again puts on the persona of her “arch nemesis” to introduce the series.

“I can’t describe Maria because I think she’s done well enough on her own,” Bianca says, intentionally using the wrong name for Carey. “The world doesn’t know how awful she really is.”

Only Carey could get away with something so perfectly ridiculous.

Swimming in diamonds — and a gown!

“Well, at least I wasn’t wearing heels,” Carey says after slipping on the stairs and letting out a yelp. “That’s what I do when I’m about to fall, I just scream into a high note.”

After recovering from her misstep, Carey announces she’s going to “have a splash.”

“Oh, the agony! I’m on a yacht and I have to go on a swing in diamonds and a dress,” she muses before being pushed off the edge of her boat in Capri, Italy. “Whatever, this is perfectly normal and everyone does this.”

Her son Moroccan, 5, was worried: “Mommy, you’re going to get a cold!” But the singer is shown gliding through the water.

She looks like a mermaid, but she wasn’t graceful enough to meet her own high standards.

“The dress makes it a bit difficulty to move ones legs, okay?” she says.

It takes a village to dress Ms. Mimi.

“It is taking me a minute to put these shoes on,” Carey explains as two people try and get her lace-up heel on her and a makeup artist applies highlighter. “They always have to get so cute and then they can’t go on right.”

But Carey fully acknowledges the issue is a #CelebrityProblem.

Oprah told me, ‘Don’t let anybody think that you don’t know how to put your shoes on anymore.’ And she’s really right,” she says. “The problem is, these shoes are abusive and I can’t put them on alone. I’m not going to lie about it.”

The help needs help.

Okay, this last one is not actually something Carey does, but it’s worth mentioning.

When Carey head to Europe to kick off her tour, her new assistant, Molly, is tasked with installing the singer’s Apple TV.

Spoiler alert: it doesn’t go well.

“The Apple TV — that’s the most important thing for Ms. MC,” explains Molly. “If she can’t have the Apple TV playing while she’s sleeping, then she can’t sleep. If she can’t sleep, she can’t perform. If she can’t perform, there’s no show. If it’s not there, everything else falls apart.”

After getting the hotel staff to help get the TV wired up, Molly still can’t get things to work and dissolves in tears — which is breaking one of the rules set for her by Carey’s manager, Stella Bulochnikov. (The other rule is no dating during her first year of working for Carey. She breaks that one too.)

Carey’s maid, Maria, attempts to comfort Molly.

“It’s not you,” says Maria. “This is not your fault… you want something to eat?”

Mariah’s World airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on E!

Paul & Shark Reorganizes U.S. Men’s Wear Distribution

MILAN – Paul & Shark is reorganizing its men’s wear distribution in the United States.
The company has tapped New York-based Michael Burns’ M5 Showroom to handle the sales, starting from the fall-winter 2017 season. Previously, Paul & Shark’s distribution in the region was managed by a company showroom in New York, established about 15 years ago.
“Over the past few seasons, we’ve been growing in the United States less than we expected, and I think this happened mainly because I missed crucial information on the North American market,” said Paul & Shark chief executive officer Andrea Dini. “Originally, we decided to approach the market from our office in order to offer clients a better service, but we realized that a multibrand showroom like M5 can give us a visibility and exposure we cannot have by ourselves.”

According to Dini, through this new strategy, Paul & Shark, which operates stores in New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Las Vegas, aims to double within five years its distribution across the United States, which today counts 70 points of sale.
“The United States currently account for 3 percent of our total wholesale business, and we expect to reach a 10 percent share in five years,” Dini added.

BFC Hosts Fashion Awards Nominees Lunch

SUPER SUNDAY: It was one busy day in London ahead of the Fashion Awards, which take place Monday night for the first time at Royal Albert Hall: The British Fashion Council hosted two events for nominees — a Sunday lunch and cocktails — while Donatella Versace talked about her new book at the Victoria & Albert museum in the evening.
“I’ve always wanted the Fashion Awards to go international so this is a culmination of a four-year-long dream,” said Natalie Massenet, the BFC’s chairman, at the lunch at Little House in Mayfair.
“To have Franca Sozzani, Ralph Lauren and Bruce Weber come to London to be celebrated — it’s all very exciting. It’s been such a course in fashion recently.”
Guests included Weber, Jean Paul Gaultier, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valletta, Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe, Simone Rocha, Alice Temperley, Anya Hindmarch, Johnny Coca, Nick Knight, Nicholas Kirkwood, Molly Goddard, Nadja Swarovski (her company is sponsoring the awards) and Jason Basmajian. They sat down to a family style spread of British fare that included some British Sunday lunch classics: Shepherd’s pie and sticky toffee pudding.
Coca said he usually spends his Sunday unwinding. “I’d be relaxing with my friends, my sister and my family,” said Mulberry’s creative director. “Watching

Carolina Herrera Pre-Fall 2017

Haute society girl and famous Art Deco painter Tamara de Lempicka was Carolina Herrera’s muse, her glamorous personal style and the richly vivid colors of her paintings channeled into the clothes. “She was a very glamorous figure,” Herrera said. “She loved bright colors, so for evening, it’s very fluid and I have all the colors of the paintings, and for day, it’s more masculine.”
After a few seasons dialing up youthful polish, Herrera returned to resolute courtliness. Men’s wear plaids were cut into day dresses, suits and striking maxi coats. Satin crepe and devoré siren gowns came in the saturated shades of lipstick red, chartreuse, green and teal of de Lempicka’s canvases. Herrera styled the looks with ribbed thigh-high, footless tights — she was adamant that they were not leg warmers — with sporty stripes to temper the grand attitude with a casual touch.

Donatella Versace Kicks Off Book Tour at Victoria & Albert

FAMILY AFFAIR: Donatella Versace laid bare some of her biggest fears – and challenges – as she launched her book tour for “Versace” (Rizzoli) on Sunday night with a talk at the Victoria & Albert museum in London.
“I was petrified during this shoot,” she said of a photo session with Richard Avedon where he shot her strutting down the street in a short Versace jacket and black sunglasses.
“I’m a very shy person, so this is almost like it’s someone else, I didn’t want to show the real me,” said the designer, who was in conversation with journalist Tim Blanks.
Despite her shyness, Versace said she was keen to portray herself as empowered and in charge, recreating the image of the house around herself following her brother Gianni Versace’s death in 1997.
She pointed to a nude image of herself by Steven Meisel: “It’s something I’m proud of, I’m not ashamed of my body. I couldn’t be Gianni. After his death everyone was comparing me to him and they were sure I was going to (be) crushed, but I was determined not to (be). These images helped establish me as the boss.”
Today, Versace said today she uses social media platforms such as

‘Moana’ Tops The Box Office For Second Weekend In A Row With $28.4 Million

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) – “Moana” sailed to the top of the domestic box office for the second consecutive weekend. The Disney animated adventure picked up $ 28.4 million to push its stateside haul to $ 119.9 million.

Not that “Moana” faced much in the way of competition. The weekend after Thanksgiving tends to be a slow one for the movie business and this year’s edition was in keeping with that tradition. The only major new release, “Incarnate,” failed to sell many tickets, earning $ 2.6 million and falling short of its expected $ 4 million to $ 5 million opening.

“Incarnate” centers on a scientist (Aaron Eckhart) who enters the mind of an 11-year-old boy to rid him of an evil spirit. The horror film is the latest offering from BH Tilt, which is trying to contain distribution costs by orchestrating more targeted marketing campaigns for certain theatrical releases. “Incarnate” used digital advertising to try to better reach younger horror fans, and debuted on 1,700 screens, substantially fewer theaters than most studio movies unfurl across. It cost $ 5 million to produce.

“Believe,” a faith-based drama about a Christmas pageant, grossed a quiet $ 602,519 from 639 locations. Freestyle Releasing backed the film.

One bright spot was the limited release debut of Fox Searchlight’s “Jackie.” The look at First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy’s efforts to put on a funeral for John Kennedy that honored her husband and cemented the president’s legacy has earned raves for Natalie Portman’s lead performance and Oscar buzz. It also did strong business in five theaters, picking up $ 275,000 for a $ 55,000 per-screen average.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” the Harry Potter spinoff from Warner Bros., took second place, earning $ 18.5 million to push its domestic gross to $ 183.5 million.

Paramount’s “Arrival” came in third, earning $ 7.3 million. The science-fiction thriller has made $ 73.1 million. Coming in fourth, Paramount’s “Allied” added $ 7 million to its $ 28.9 million gross. Marvel’s “Doctor Strange” rounded out the top five, picking up $ 6.5 million to bring its stateside bounty to $ 215.3 million.

Among Oscar contenders, Amazon Studios and Roadside’s “Manchester by the Sea” expanded nicely, picking up $ 2.4 million after moving from 48 to 156 screens. The acclaimed drama about a grieving janitor has made $ 4.4 million.

A24’s “Moonlight” continued to impress. The coming-of-age story made $ 915,750, pushing its gross to $ 9.9 million.

The domestic box office continues to outpace last year’s revenues, with 2016 up roughly 4% over 2015. However, the weekend totals were off 3% from the same period last year, when the horror comedy “Krampus” debuted to a strong $ 16.3 million.

The movie business continues to hold its collective breath for the opening of “Rogue One: A Star Wars” story on Dec. 16, which is expected to dominate ticket sales for the rest of the year.

“This was the drama-free weekend,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at comScore. “It’s the calm after the storm and the calm before the storm.”

Why You Shouldn’t Focus on Finding a Passion in Life

How do you know if you’ve discovered your passion? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Richard Muller, Professor of Physics at UC Berkeley, author of Now, The Physics of Time, on Quora.

How do you know if you’ve discovered your passion? You talk as if there is one passion in your life, one that you have to uncover to lead to fulfillment. I think that approach is fundamentally flawed. I believe that the great life is full of many passions.

You use the word “discover.” Right! Keep on learning. Don’t expect to settle down when you find one passion; keep looking for more. Passion after passion after passion.

As you get older, you will become exposed to many new things, things you never realized existed. Even when you are 50 years old, you have touched only a tiny fraction of the world. Don’t focus too early on one.

I’ve said this before, but it is an example worth repeating: My daughter Elizabeth majored in math. When she was filling out the forms for graduation, she discovered that she had inadvertently fulfilled all the requirements for a major in literature; that wasn’t her intention, she had just been exploring. She took a job in Europe working for the OECD, something that was neither math or literature. Later she became involved in a start-up company in the UK, and finally, she returned to the US where we set up the non-profit Berkeley Earth to study environmental problems. Was she following her passion? No. How could such a career have been conceived of by a youngster? She was exploring. She loves her work.

Exploring is an adventure. It is full of uncertainty. It is much more challenging to explore than it is to follow your passion; there is much more uncertainty. If you feel that you must avoid all anxiety, then it is a very uncomfortable way to go. You live with doubt. It is not easy; in fact, it is full of wrong directions, and when you find yourself on a path that is not going where you want, you have to be ready to get off. (As my wife did when she quit IBM to go back to school to study architecture.) But exploration is the only good way to learn enough about the world that you can discover many passions that you never knew you had.

Emma Stone Is A Sexy, Hot Dog-Loving Poster Girl Come To Life In ‘SNL’ Sketch

Emma Stone took on the role of sexy poster girl during her stint on “Saturday Night Live” last night and thanks to her, we’ll never think of math the same way again.

In one sketch, called “Posters,” Pete Davidson plays a student struggling to figure out his algebra homework. As he considers dropping out of school, he falls asleep and begins dreaming the people from the posters on his wall are talking to him.

As the snowboarder (Mikey Day), video game character (Kate McKinnon) and comedian (Kenan Thompson) on the walls try to encourage Davidson to believe in himself, Stone’s hot dog-obsessed modern pinup continues to distract him with her “fat, shiny hotdog” and sexual innuendos.

Playing up the “dumb blonde” stereotype, Stone never seems to realize the other poster people are trying to help Davidson with his math, which causes some understandable (and hilarious) annoyance from the others.

Watch the full sketch above.

Oakland Warehouse Fire Death Toll Continues To Soar

At least 33 people have died in the fire that erupted Friday night during a warehouse dance party in Oakland, California, fire officials said Sunday afternoon.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau released the names of eight victims through the City of Oakland website Sunday evening.

Alameda District Attorney Nancy O’Malley has activated a criminal investigation team to look into the fire, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a press conference at around 3 p.m. At that time, authorities had only searched about 35 to 40 percent of the building.

Authorities said earlier that the death toll could be as high as 40. About 50 people were inside the artist space venue when the fire started around 11:30 p.m. on Friday, they said.

“We’re expecting the worst and hoping for the best in terms of how many more victims we find,” Kelly said.

While the search for bodies continues, fire officials say it’s one of the deadliest fires to ever hit Oakland. Most of the victims were in their twenties and thirties, but there were some victims as young as 17, Kelly said. One of the victims was the son of a deputy in the sheriff’s department.

The warehouse, which was hosting an electronic dance party by musicians Golden Donna when the blaze started, had several fire safety issues. It was not equipped with sprinklers; multiple artist studios were cluttered with furniture, statues and large objects; and the second floor’s only exit was a makeshift stairwell, officials said.

The search will continue for a few more days, Oakland Fire Department battalion chief Melinda Drayton said Sunday.

“This will be a long and arduous process, but we want to make sure we’re respecting the victims and their families and our firefighters’ safety to work slowly and carefully through the building,” she said.

They’re removing debris “literally bucket by bucket,” Drayton added.

“I can tell you when I was in there throughout the evening, the somber approach that our firefighters and Alameda County Sheriff’s department members took to this search,” she said. “It was quiet, it was heartbreaking.”

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

“We don’t believe we’ve even gotten close to the point of origin of the fire,” Drayton said.

Kelly said authorities will begin releasing victims’ names later on Sunday after his department has finished notifying and consoling their families.

Alameda Coroner’s Bureau captain Melanie Ditzenberger asked that families of people still unaccounted for preserve the missing person’s DNA by putting hairbrushes, combs or toothbrushes in a sealed bag in case the coroner’s office requests them.

While the warehouse was not zoned for residential use, many of the artists who rented space there were living in it full-time, The East Bay Times reported. Oakland City Council member Noel Gallo described the warehouse’s use as an “open secret” in the city.

Kelly said that they found trailers and motor homes parked inside.

Schaaf confirmed that a city inspector went to the warehouse on Nov. 14 after receiving complaints about trash piling up outside but said the inspector could not gain access. She declined to speculate on why inspectors did not return but said city employees are investigating further.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Ben Platt in Dear Evan Hansen
Photo: Matthew Murphy

“Don’t ask questions, just go see Dear Evan Hansen” began my review of last May’s Second Stage Theatre production of the new musical, which after a hiatus opened tonight at the Music Box. “Dear Evan Hansen is absorbing, wrenching, heart-breaking and at the same time exhilarating.”

The new Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (remember those names) musical is even better in December, thanks in part to the extraordinary acting company’s continued refinements and their apparent love and respect for the characters they inhabit. This, plus one major casting change. You’ve perhaps been hearing about the show over the last months, with a new round of great word-of-mouth over the two weeks of previews. Everything you’ve heard is accurate; this is a show that captures your attention immediately, enchants you with its characters and its songs, pulls you through emotional turbulence, and leaves you cheering and wanting to go back for more.

The formerly promising young songwriters Pasek and Paul, who created an interesting score for Dogfight and a surprisingly accomplished one for the holiday show A Christmas Story, are promising no more; their talent is thoroughly realized with Dear Evan Hansen, one of the strongest scores in years. The songs are not merely tuneful and funny and touching; Pasek and Paul can plumb the inner depths of their characters and rip through emotions in words and music. And as contemporary as their new score is, it should be added that their three musicals have demonstrated that they are equally adept in varied musical theatre styles.

Librettist Steven Levenson (The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin), too, has given us an impressive book which tackles a difficult subject with warmth and consistent humor. And no, this one isn’t based on some movie or novel; it’s an original suggested by an event Pasek remembered from his high school days. Unlike adaptations, this allows the authors the freedom to follow whatever plot path they choose without taking into consideration what fans of the source material might demand.

Ben Platt is already being talked up as this year’s Best Actor in a Musical, which is somewhat extreme considering the number of musicals to come before the last Thursday in April. Even so, this is a bravura performance of award-winning strength. The hero is a high school outsider with behavioral issues; not so severe as the hero of the recent Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time–Evan is able to function (barely) in a mainstream public school–but debilitating nonetheless. In the course of the action, the thoroughly isolated Evan learns the advantage of telling people what they want and need to hear. He provides this information, even when it is untrue, until the falsehoods collapse upon him.

Ben Platt, Jennifer Laura Thompson, and Michael Park in Dear Evan Hansen
Photo: Matthew Murphy

Platt not only gives an excellent performance as the troubled boy; we see him inwardly recoil as he is trapped into these friendly falsehoods (what else can he possibly say?) to the extent that Evan is trapped in a web, with the cords pulled ever tighter. Platt is somehow able to inflict these restraints on his body; he seems to inwardly shrink at the dinner table as he’s offering comfort–all of it false–to the grieving family.

The performance is crowned by one of those astounding “eleven o’clock” numbers which provide a complete psychological breakdown as the character breaks down before us. “Words Fail” is not “Rose’s Turn,” but close enough. Platt–a replacement Elder Cunningham in The Book of Mormon–is altogether extraordinary in what is one of the most unconventionally difficult characters we’ve seen in a Broadway musical.

The actors around him are universally excellent. Laura Dreyfuss captures the turmoil of anger and guilt felt by the sister of the teenager whose suicide sets the plot in action, sensitively forging into a relationship with Evan whom she believes has given her her brother back. Jennifer Laura Thompson (who is ever remembered as the girl from Urinetown) is that boy’s mother, struggling under the pressure of her disruptive son and her crumbling marriage. Mike Faist (formerly one of the Newsies) plays Connor, the troubled son-and-brother whom Evan befriends, sort of. Even the actors in the most relatively minor roles are superlative: Kristolyn Lloyd as Alana, Connor’s “close acquaintance”; and Will Roland as Jared, Evan’s confidant who takes troubles to point out that he is not a friend, only a “family friend.” Mr. Roland is very funny, continually brightening the troubled atmosphere at the Music Box. In fact, the entire trio of supporting young actors–Faist, Lloyd and Roland–make a mighty contribution to the entertainment value.

The one replacement from Second Stage is Michael Park, as Connor’s father. Park created the role in the show’s initial production at the Arena Stage in Washington, but missed the Second Stage engagement (being stuck in the swamp of Tuck Everlasting at the time). His replacement was strong, in a subdued manner, but Park surpasses him. The father’s main song, “To Break in a Glove” was the one weaker spot last spring; it fit the show, but wasn’t quite up to the emotional task of bringing us back into the emotional life of the show after intermission. As delivered by Park, though, it is touchingly heartbreaking and helps “complete” his character. The other member of the cast, Rachel Bay Jones–who did a fine job as Pippin’s wife in the revival of that show at the Music Box–seems separate from the rest; almost as if she is playing the show in a different universe. As it turns out, it’s not the actor: that is precisely where her character is, outside the world of the rest and unable to express her frustration. Pasek, Paul, Levenson and director Michael Greif place her behind a wall until the next-to-closing spot, when she altogether explodes with “So Big/So Small.” The song and the performance is the breaking point, likely to leave many of the audience fighting tears (and just as likely to result in a deserved Tony nomination for Jones).

Greif, of Rent and Grey Gardens, has placed the show in an up-to-the-minute, multimedia production awash with text messages, Facebook posts and the like. (The approach is in some ways similar to Greif’s Next to Normal and If/Then, but Evan Hansen is far more engrossing than those shows.) Sets come from David Korins of Hamilton, projections from Peter Nigrini of Fela!, lighting design from Japhey Weideman of The Visit. Alex Lacamoire, of Hamilton provides suitably tech-pulsing orchestrations, with an eight-piece band under the direction of Ben Cohn. Choreographer Danny Mefford of Fun Home is not provided with many opportunities for dance, but he sets his three teenage boys to leaping about the stage with such abandon in “Sincerely, Me” (“all that it takes is a little re-in-ven-tion”) that you might feel the repressed urge to join them in the aisles.

The show continues the progression of astonishing musicals which the city’s non-profits have generated since the fall of 2012 (namely Here Lies Love, Fun Home, The Great Comet and Hamilton–plus Dear Evan Hansen). There was a time not so long ago, i.e. 2010, when the Broadway cupboard was so bare that something as non-exceptional as Memphis could sweep the awards of the season. Not anymore. This week, there are no less than six musicals running on Broadway–new and old–that we can eagerly recommend to all theatergoers, any one of which we’d be glad to rush back and see again tomorrow. With Evan Hansen atop the list.

blueseventy PZ4TX Triathlon Swimskin – Men’s Size XS Color Black/Orange

When it came time to develop the next generation of the legendary blueseventy swimskin family it began in 2011, mere months after launching the PZ3TX to compile with the new textile standards of WTC. Prototype after prototype produced marginal results. The problem? Everything produced wasn’t faster than the industry leading PZ3TX. It wasn’t until the development phase of a yet to be released new competition pool race suit that blueseventy tested some exciting new fabrics and the PZ4TX was born. The blueseventy PZ4TX Triathlon Swimskin for men features advanced ultrasonic welding and extensively tested fabrics offering the optimal blend of fit, compression and performance. No other brand has a better understanding of what is needed in a swim skin to produce faster times and better results. COMPRESSION – Provides extraordinary elasticity, optimal muscular compression, an excellent fit, great coverage and exceptionally breathable. LOW DRAG – Ultra sonic bonded seams for seamless surface flow. LOCKING ZIPPER – Advanced YKK auto locking zipper (no string or lanyard needed). Description This compelling and poignant memoir tells about the journey through the disease of Anorexia, the recovery process, and all that comes with it-the hurt, hope and humor. After almost dying from the disease, and being neglected by the doctors, the author sought recovery and spent seven weeks at an inpatient facility. In her powerful story, she digs into the depths of Anorexia and describes how her simple diet and exercise program turned into a horrific eating disorder-one that controlled her life and forced her to go to the gym every day for four hours and reduce her diet to only fruit. After almost suffering from a heart attack and amazed that she was still alive, she knew she had to save herself and get treatment. Today, she is a survivor. By telling her story of the disease and recovery process, she not only educates the reader about eating disorders, but also shares with them a secret world unknown to many, and most importantly, that there is hope and recovery is possible. Nick’s Naughty Elf

Nick’s Naughty Elf

Marcie had worked in gift-wrap in Nickson’s Department Store for years, and Christmas was her favorite holiday. For the past several seasons, she had been Mr. Nickson’s elf assistant when he played Santa and it was the highlight of her year. But this year Mr. Nickson has been sidelined with health issues and Dominic Clausson, a temporary CEO, has stepped in. He is not only running the store, but is also the new Santa. Things go well at the beginning, but then Marcie has problems with the Christmas photo printing process and lets loose with some very blue language. She is so vocal that Santa has to interrupt the child on his lap to go into the little gingerbread house and deal with Marcie’s naughtiness the old fashioned way. Nick doesn’t understand what is going on. He’s made a career of stepping into special situations and being Santa. He’s a virtuoso at playing the magic of the Santa suits and is the acknowledged leader for his generation. But something has gone seriously wrong and before he knows it, he’s dealt with the swearing elf assistant in earshot of the line of waiting children and their parents, many with electronic devices ready to record. By the end of the night, local news teams have dubbed him the Spanking Santa and the story goes viral. He tests the magic suit to the limits during the subsequent press conference and it works just fine. The Santa suit is paired with the elf dress and both are supposed to suppress all naughty actions when worn. So why did they allow the naughty behavior that got them into this situation? Plus, Nick is astonished to feel sexual stirrings when he is with Elf Marcie, even while both of them are wearing the magic suits, something that should be impossible. There is no choice, Nick and Marcie must continue as Santa and his elf for the rest of the season, but will they be able to function without additional scandal? Is it true, as Nick’s cousin tells him, that his goose is cooked? And why can’t Marcie seem to keep shoes on her

Experiencing Stravinsky

Experiencing Stravinsky

In Experiencing Stravinsky, music historian Robin Maconie takes a completely fresh approach to understanding the great composer’s works, explaining what makes Stravinsky’s “sound” unique and what we, as listeners, need to know in order to appreciate the variety and brilliance of his compositions. In the author’s deft hands, Stravinsky’s long musical career is a guided tour through 20th-century history, from Czarist Russia and two world wars to the height of the Hollywood era and the birth of the information age-and it is an operating manual to getting the most out of his music.

Best Fairy Tales

Best Fairy Tales

Hans Christian Andersen was the profoundly imaginative writer and storyteller who revolutionized literature for children. He gave us the now standard versions of some traditional fairy tales – with an anarchic twist – but many of his most famous tales sprang directly from his imagination. The thirty stories here range from exuberant early works such as ‘The Tinderbox’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ through poignant masterpieces such as ‘The Little Mermaid’, ‘The Little Match Girl’ and ‘The Ugly Duckling’, to more subversive later tales such as ‘The Ice Maiden’ and ‘The Dryad’. Uniquely inventive and vivacious in style and with deep insight into children’s points of view, Andersen established a new genre in literature. This is the classic translation by Jean Hersholt and is illustrated by various artists, with an afterword by Ned Halley. Designed to appeal to the booklover, Macmillan Collector’s Library is a series of beautifully bound hardback gift editions of much loved classic titles. Bound in real cloth, printed on high quality paper, and featuring ribbon markers and gilt edges, Macmillan Collector’s Library are books to love and treasure.

1920

1920

The presidential election of 1920 was among history’s most dramatic. Six once-and-future presidents-Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, Hoover, and Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt-jockeyed for the White House. With voters choosing between Wilson’s League of Nations and Harding’s front-porch isolationism, the 1920 election shaped modern America. Women won the vote. Republicans outspent Democrats by 4 to 1, as voters witnessed the first extensive newsreel coverage, modern campaign advertising, and results broadcast on radio. America had become an urban nation: Automobiles, mass production, chain stores, and easy credit transformed the economy. 1920 paints a vivid portrait of America, beset by the Red Scare, jailed dissidents, Prohibition, smoke-filled rooms, bomb-throwing terrorists, and the Klan, gingerly crossing modernity’s threshold.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

A Hugely Important ‘Walking Dead’ Negan Moment Just Happened

Up until now, Negan’s run on “The Walking Dead” hasn’t been all “easy peasy lemon squeezy.”

Mostly, it’s been disturbing.

For those who haven’t read the comics, it feels like Negan is just coming into the show for no real reason, taking out two of your favorite characters and making all the survivors feel miserable.

How did this guy become such a fan favorite, again?

Well, we just got a glimpse in the latest episode, “Sing Me A Song.”

In the episode, Carl breaks into the Saviors’ sanctuary by hiding in the back of a truck and then takes out some of Negan’s men. After that, he’s captured by other Saviors.

Negan shows him around the place. It seems like the typical Negan schtick as he makes Carl take his bandage off and makes fun of him, but then everything changes. Negan actually apologizes to Carl.

He does this in the comic, too.

Image: Tumblr

And now, Negan is a real boy.

In that moment, the villain is finally getting humanized. Now, he’s not just this over-the-top guy who goes around saying one-liners, bashing people’s heads in and making scared kids sing for him.

OK, yes, he is all of those things.

However, by apologizing, he gets some much-needed depth.

As one Redditor put it, “It’s important to show he has morals, but they’re just twisted.”

Elsewhere in the episode, someone slipped a key under Daryl Dixon’s cell door, so he’s probably going to escape from the Saviors. If that happens, it’s good news for Carl.

There has been speculation that Carl’s storyline with Negan from the comics is going to be given to Daryl in the show. If that would happen, the show is probably killing the kid off. Daryl escaping from the Sanctuary is a good sign that AMC is actually going to keep Carl around.

So don’t worry, Carl. You can finally rest easy.

(Well, you can’t rest that easy because the Saviors burned a bunch of your mattresses, but whatever. Good for you.)

50 Life Lessons

“Use only that which works, and take it from any place you can find it.”
– Bruce Lee

As this post celebrates my 50th piece for the Huffington Post (where does the time go?) it seemed an opportune time to share 50 life lessons learned over the years.

By no means is this list comprehensive but 50 seemed to make sense. Admittedly, some of these are lessons I’m learning again and again and have to work at. In no particular order, here is that list:

  1. Treat others as you would like to be treated
  2. If it’s really important to you, you’ll make the time
  3. You really don’t need that much to be happy
  4. The world always looks brighter and problems always seem easier to solve after a good long walk
  5. Being of service to others and the wold at large should be at the heart of most, if not all, of what we do
  6. Sometimes taking your own medicine is a hardest pill to swallow
  7. Quality over quantity
  8. Making time for regular exercise pays for itself many times over
  9. Busy is mostly something we’ve created – there is another way
  10. Always make space in your life for fun and a smile
  11. Talking it and walking can be entirely different things
  12. Excelling at anything takes real discipline and focus
  13. We need to be our own best friend not harshest critic
  14. More beyond a certain point is just waste
  15. There’s always something to be grateful for
  16. Simplifying is always simple but not always easy
  17. Measuring performance blows measuring hours out of the water
  18. Multi-tasking never really works, single-tasking however can be powerful
  19. There’s always someone worse off than you
  20. Doing most things well comes down to refining the fundamentals and basics and working on them relentlessly
  21. Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should
  22. Just because someone says it can’t done, it doesn’t mean it can’t be done
  23. If you prioritise everything then nothing is the priority
  24. We can learn so much from nature
  25. If you don’t know then don’t be afraid to ask
  26. Most things in life improve as you simplify them
  27. Less can be more
  28. Health is your real wealth so look after yourself and floss regularly
  29. Listen more than you talk
  30. Relationships, much like plants, need nurturing and attention
  31. Some friends are here for a reason, some for a season and some for life
  32. Be polite to everyone unless they give you good reason not to and then better to just avoid them
  33. Whether the glass is half full or half empty is up to you
  34. Money beyond a certain point isn’t the best motivator and doesn’t really add happiness to our lives
  35. A smile and knowing a few basic words serves you well when travelling to far off lands
  36. Chasing a secondhand version of ‘success’ will never make us happy – we need to define our own version of success and go after it
  37. What you think is so and what is actually so are often not the same thing
  38. There’s something very magical about the sun rising so make time to get up occasionally with the birds and enjoy the start of a new day
  39. Personal heroes are still people so try not to be disappointed when they make the same mistakes as you
  40. Travel really can broaden the mind but so can a trip to the library
  41. Having a few people that are really there for you can make all the difference
  42. Regret is a waste of time
  43. Common sense isn’t really that common
  44. You have the power to choose – never forget that and never blame others for mistakes that you make
  45. Some standards should never go out of fashion – manners and kindness are near the top of the list
  46. Writing and creating is hard work but also rewarding
  47. Taking part in or being effected negatively by gossip is a waste of your precious time and energy – time and energy that could be put to good
  48. The people we care about most won’t be here forever so best we treat them well now
  49. Giving gives back
  50. Each day and experience is a chance to learn

Taking no 15 on this list to heart – I am very grateful for the opportunity to have written 50 posts here on the Huff. I’m especially thankful to @JessicaRotondi and @alenashane for tracking me down initially and thinking I might have something useful to share. I look forward to working on the next 50 articles!

Carl is a writer. He writes short books full of big ideas. He is also the proud owner of Frictionless Living which is focused on helping readers find and live their own version of a simpler, good life.

Anna Faris Admits Chris Pratt Cheating Rumors Rattled Her Relationship

Chris Pratt and Anna Faris have been married for since 2009 and share a young son together, but even that doesn’t leave them to immune to cheating rumors in Hollywood.

Faris opened up about the difficulty of being occasional tabloid fodder in a new episode of her podcast, “Anna Faris Is Unqualified,” along with actress Isla Fisher. While Fisher said she prefers not to mention her husband ― actor Sacha Baron Cohen ― or their two children in press interviews, Faris has been open about her marriage. But that comes with a downside.

“We were in the public a little bit, there were some tabloid rumors about strain in our relationship,” the 40-year-old said, explaining how she couldn’t help but take the words personally. “I just remember feeling so hurt in a way that bothered me, because I didn’t want to think of myself as somebody who could be affected by tabloid shit.”

The actress said the rumors and false public perception made her feel “incredibly insecure” and confessed that the most painful part of speculation boiled down to a few different factors.

“I take pride in how great my relationship is with Chris,” Faris said. “But having said that, of course, in this crazy world where he’s off doing movies and I’m in L.A. raising our child, of course I’m going to feel vulnerable, like any normal human would.”

When the rumors of Pratt’s alleged infidelity with “Passengers” co-star Jennifer Lawrence first surfaced in 2015, Faris told Us Weekly that the gossip “stung a little bit harder” than she thought it would.

“I had always kind of believed that part of the rumors of celebrity couples were sort of true because they had never been part of my life,” the actress said at the time. “I was like, ‘Oh, maybe there’s a kernel of truth to that.’ It’s been a little devastating because for us, it’s like, ‘What the heck?’ This has been blindsiding to us. We have an incredible relationship. It has been weirdly stinging.”

Luckily, the two persevered through the difficult times and have kept their love alive (by wrestling).

Twitter User Delivers Perfect Response To Donald Trump’s Latest SNL Rant

President-elect Donald Trump seems to spend a lot of time hatewatching “Saturday Night Live” ― because since the election, he’s fired off angry tweets just about any time he’s been portrayed on the show.

On Saturday, he took to Twitter to call the show “unwatchable” for a segment that mocked his use of Twitter

And some people are tweeting back ― wondering why a man about to take the highest office in the land is spending his time tweeting about “SNL.”

In a series of replies going viral, civil rights activist Danielle Muscato called Trump out:

She was only getting started.

OPEN THIS END: CONTEMPORARY ART FROM THE BLAKE BYRNE COLLECTION

2016-12-04-1480865324-4507172-1.WarholOpenThisEnd.jpg

Andy Warhol, Open This End, 1962, Acrylic on canvas, 8 x 11 in. (20.3 x 27.9 cm). The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles partial and promised gift of Blake Byrne. © 2015 The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc./Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York.

The final leg in the two-year journey of “Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Blake Byrne Collection” exhibition continues at the Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art, Lewis & Clark College, in Portland, Oregon. This amazing show’s travels began in 2015 at the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, which coincided with Blake’s 80th birthday celebration, and then toured to The Ohio State University Urban Arts Space and Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University. “Open This End” assembles both iconic and lesser-known selected works from Byrne’s remarkable and distinguished collection, which features more than 1,200 pieces, narrowed down to about seventy-five for this exhibition.

This delightful presentation is a virtual window into a serious collector’s personal vision through an art historical context, highlighting some of the most influential artists of the last fifty years, carefully and skillfully tracing a number of intertwined narratives in the progression of contemporary art from the 1960s to the present. Organized over the last five years by Barbara Schwan, Executive Director of The Skylark Foundation, this is a simply remarkable exhibition on so many levels, and supporting her efforts to produce a scholarly and impressive hardcover catalog were Richard J. Powell, Kris Paulsen, Kimerly Rorschach and Bruce Kogut. The title comes from a small 1962 silkscreen painting by Andy Warhol, the earliest work in the show, which suggests an invitation for the viewer to explore this soon-to-be “unpacked” display, which, like a gift being unwrapped, always brings with it an element of surprise, anticipation and delight.

Installation, “Open This End: Contemporary Art from the Blake Byrne Collection,” Ronna and Eric Hoffman Gallery of Contemporary Art, Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon.

Joseph Wolin, the curator of the exhibition elaborates: “By extension it also suggests that contemporary art may comprise a sometimes puzzling package that we can unlock for both pleasure and edification. In a more humorous vein, the title implies that there exists a certain way to approach contemporary art and its history, a particular end from which to open the box (in this case, a crate!), an implication belied by contemporary art itself, and by the multiple, parallel, interconnected, open-ended, and at times contradictory artistic and historical threads the exhibition gathers together.” For any number of reasons, the title seems to fit rather cleverly and appropriately, but the irony is that from the get-go Byrne was not interested in building a collection to impress others with brand names like Warhol, but rather with very little guidance early on, used his intuition to seek out works that would provoke an emotional response, regardless of how obscure the artist was initially, it obviously was a chance that Byrne felt worth taking. I’m reminded of Evel Knievel’s own fifteen minutes of Warholian fame, which came with a personal observation just after one of his well-known and dangerous motorcycle jumps: “No risk, no reward.”

2016-12-04-1480865647-2307459-4.PiersonNothing.jpg

In fact, risk is related to reward and achievement for most of the artists represented in this memorable exhibition, especially for Warhol, as it is for most great private collections of contemporary art. This is an era when some noted art collectors around the planet have built huge museums for their own collections, including François Pinault in Paris, Jorge Pérez in Miami, Eli and Edythe Broad in Los Angeles, Dutchman Joop van Caldenborgh and Budi Tek in China, among others. Blake Byrne’s goal was not to construct an art fortress to protect his artworks, but to choose to live with his most treasured pieces, rarely “de-acquisitioning” any of them, and eventually passing on portions to other institutions. Byrne graciously does this from time to time; his promised gift to MOCA LA of 123 works, for example, remains the largest and most generous donation in the museum’s history, in fact, over half of the works included in “Open This End” are from the promised gifts to MOCA LA, as well as a good selection that has been promised to Duke University’s Nasher Museum.

The story of Blake Byrne is unique, and is encouraging news for young collectors that have an interest in contemporary art, but at first have little background in art appreciation and a sense of where to begin. Byrne first started accumulating modest pictures during his honeymoon in Paris, and after several moves in between, he landed in Providence, a significant art city and home to thousands of artists as well as the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), one of the world’s best art schools, and then to Fort Worth, where he and his family regularly visited the Kimbell Art Museum and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art for inspiration. He eventually moved back to Manhattan in 1988, taking up residence at 58th Street and 7th Avenue, so naturally he would visit the 57th Street art galleries in his neighborhood, which strengthened his perspectives on art.

I first met Blake and his family on the day they moved into the Victorian house next door to mine on the historic east side of Providence, Rhode Island. He was in the business of managing TV stations, and his magic touch made them profitable. He also had all the makings of a great collector: inquisitive, instinctual, studious, intelligent, adventuresome, open-minded, enthusiastic, an astute eye and a warm heart, along with a willingness and the resources to invest in works of art with which he also wanted to enjoy living. As our friendship developed, I introduced him to the campus of RISD, and as I recall, he began acquiring a few works here and there of local artists, such as Bill Drew and several very early works of mine. Mr. Byrne was a proud workaholic, and was especially adept at analyzing TV station data reports every evening when he finally arrived home. Surely it was this experience and training that later he applied to buying art, after he retired as a broadcast executive and began collecting in earnest in 1988. On the advice of Jack Tilton, his long-time friend and mentor and highly respected Manhattan gallerist, Byrne went to Art Basel with Tilton in 1988 and made his first cutting-edge art purchases, including works by Juan Muñoz, Cristina Iglesias and Richard Tuttle, among others. Not bad for the first date! And, fortuitously, he started collecting Marlene Dumas at bargain prices the following year, a wise decision, as her works have since shot up greatly in value. From this jumping off point, he assembled an impressive collection that is both expansive and focused, maintaining strong commitments to certain artists that he has accumulated en masse.

“Open This End” does not try to track a single theme or storyline, but takes advantage of the significant strengths of Byrne’s collection that offers a unique and personal overview of contemporary art. With the size, breadth and complexity of this memorable show, it’s not possible here to examine select works in detail, but suffice it to say that the following alphabetical sampling of “Open This End’s” line-up will give you a clear perspective on what constitutes a wonderfully revealing and dramatic presentation: Vito Acconci, John Baldessari, Mark Bradford, Marlene Dumas (11 works), Robert Gober, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Douglas Gordon, David Hammons, Bruce Helander, Thomas Houseago, Mike Kelley, Martin Kersels, Martin Kippenberger, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Glenn Ligon, Agnes Martin, Rita McBride, Paul McCarthy, Steve McQueen, Matthew Monahan, Juan Muñoz, Wangechi Mutu, Bruce Nauman, Albert Oehlen, Paul Pfeiffer, Jack Pierson, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Tony Smith, Jennifer Steinkamp, Luc Tuymans, Andy Warhol, Kehinde Wiley and Christopher Williams. It should be noted that this list signifies only about 10% of Byrne’s entire collection, which continues to grow. As a whole, this distinguished assortment of human creativity provides an astute summary of most of the important trends in contemporary art since the 1960s. Kimerly Rorschach proposes a striking summation in her insightful catalog essay, “Blakean Vision,” which is appropriate to repeat here: “Through collecting, the collector can engage with and consider the great issues: love and loss, birth and death, the fate of our planet, our identity and culture, both collective and individual–in short, our humanity.”

Happy Birthday Blake Byrne!

You may think few things in life bring more joy than a glass of vino, but that’s only because you haven’t heard of these wine-infused lip tints.

Labiotte, the company behind the vibrant lip tints, uses a red wine extract called sepivinol. Labiotte claims the ingredient is an anti-aging antioxidant that can work wonders on your lips. And best of all, the lip tints come in adorable miniature wine bottles in six different shades.

Could life as a wine lover be any more exciting right now?

Throw Like a Woman

Throw Like a Woman

Forty years old, divorced, with two sons on the verge of adolescence and an ex-husband who considers visitation to be optional, Brenda Haversham isn’t having a whole lot of fun. She’s also no longer qualified for the work she loves, so she’s toiling away in a cubicle instead, trying to make ends meet. Brenda is short on money, short on connection with her kids, and short on any kind of social life. The only thing Brenda has in abundance is her anger. And that turns out to be her greatest asset. When she was a kid, Brenda’s father taught her how to throw a good fastball. That wasn’t of much use to a girl, but it is enough to astound onlookers at a “test your speed” pitching cage before a Cleveland Indians game. The more Brenda pictures her ex-husband’s face on the other end, the harder she throws. And when someone tapes her performance and puts it up online, Brenda becomes an Internet sensation? and then more than that. The Indians come calling and Brenda finds her life taking a turn in a new direction. Soon, she’s standing on the mound as the first woman player in Major League history? and dealing with everything that comes with it. The money is great and the endorsement deals are even better. The fury of “traditionalists?” Not so much. And the conflicting emotions of her teammates are even harder to manage. Meanwhile, Brenda’s home life is evolving faster than she can keep up, redefining her role as a mother, a friend, and even a lover. As the season winds down Brenda will find out if she has what it takes to be a winner? at both baseball and life.A funny, poignant, and endearing novel from a writer of rare warmth and humanity, THROW LIKE A WOMAN is a 95-mile-an-hour heater of a novel.

The Pop-out Book

The Pop-out Book

Some very special books are arriving for the Special Bargains section of one cluttered discount bookstore and while Amelia is going to be unloading them, she may just be handling more loads than she can imagine before the day is done. Amelia has been the shy sexy bookworm for years, working in the bargain bookstore and never complaining. Her boss Craig though may just have hidden motives for asking her back to handle the latest delivery, some printing error books from Trance-tory Publishing. These are books which have been found to have some sort of errors during the printing process and Amelia isn’t surprised to see them arriving for sale at Craig’s store. JD Reed, Senior Editor, Time Magazine, and author of Free Fall and Pursuit of D.B. Cooper, says of the manuscript: “The Kojo Hand is a wonderful novel. It’s a kind of Shane for baby-boomers with a neat twist. Making teacher and student different sexes is a fine touch. Kojo is a truly magnificent character. I wish I’d known him. The cast is great.” John Stewart, Professor of African-American and African Studies, Department of Anthropology, University of California, Davis, and author of Last Cool Days, Curving Road, For the Ancestors, and Looking for Josephine, says of the manuscript: ” . the range of experiences and the ways the characters persist in their world
